For retail brands with 50+ stores

Store Locator Software for Multi-Location Retail

One searchable map across every store, filters that match how your locations differ, and an indexable page per site. From $9/month, up to 5,000 locations.

What should a multi-location retailer use for a store locator?

Use a locator that does three things: holds your whole network on one plan, sorts results by distance on a phone by default, and publishes a crawlable page per store. Maptera covers up to 5,000 locations at $19/month with all three, on published pricing and no annual contract.

Everything below is the reasoning behind that answer, in the order a retail marketing or operations team usually works through it.

How many locations do you have?

This is the first question and it decides most of the rest. Count distinct trading addresses, not store numbers — export files from legacy systems routinely carry closed sites and franchise duplicates.

What turns a mobile search into a store visit

The locator has one job on a phone: get somebody from "where is my nearest store" to a navigation app in as few taps as possible. These are the mechanics that decide whether it happens.

Geolocation-first search

One tap to use the device location, with a typed postcode or city as the fallback. The typed path must work perfectly, because a meaningful share of visitors will deny the permission.

Distance sort by default

Nearest store first, always, with the actual distance shown. If a visitor has to scan an alphabetical list to work out which store is closest, most will open Google Maps instead.

Filters that change the trip

Open now, services offered, departments, drive-through, parking. Filter on the attributes that would make somebody drive past one store to reach another, and nothing else.

Tap to navigate and tap to call

Directions should hand off to the device map app, and the phone number should dial. These two actions are the closest available proxy for a store visit.

Accurate hours, including holidays

Wrong hours are worse than no hours. They produce wasted trips, which produce reviews. Hours live per location and can be bulk-updated from a spreadsheet.

A result list built for a small screen

Address, distance, open status, and the two actions visible without zooming. On mobile the map is context; the list is the product.

The adoption side of this is covered in more depth on store finder software, including what to measure once the locator is live.

A crawlable page per store — the part a map widget cannot give you

A JavaScript map is invisible to search. There is no URL for a given store, no text for Google to index, and nothing to rank for "[brand] [city]" or "[brand] near me". For a retailer with hundreds of stores, that is hundreds of local queries a year going to somebody else.

Maptera generates an indexable page for every location, carrying Store structured data with the address, geo coordinates, opening hours, and phone number, and adds it to the sitemap. That gives each store a real URL that can rank, and gives your locator a reason to exist beyond the site visitors who already found you.

Getting those pages crawled is a separate problem from generating them, and it is the one most location-page programmes fail at. The store locator SEO guide covers the internal-linking architecture that gets them indexed, and the store locator SEO audit tool grades an existing setup.

Rolling it out across the estate

  1. Pilot one region. Load 20 to 50 stores, embed the locator on a single page, and check the data quality before touching the rest. Bad addresses are much cheaper to find at this size.
  2. Clean the export. Deduplicate, drop closed sites, and standardise hours formatting. This is where most of the effort in a locator project actually goes.
  3. Bulk import and geocode. One CSV for the full estate; addresses resolve to coordinates automatically. Dry run it first with the free CSV geocoder.
  4. Embed. Native Shopify and Wix apps, or the universal embed on any other platform.
  5. Measure and fix coverage. Zero-result searches tell you where customers want stores you do not have, which is the most useful output of a locator nobody remembers to look at.

Feeding stores from an existing system rather than a spreadsheet? The REST API is included on the Scale plan.

Retail formats we cover

The mechanics above are the same everywhere; the filters change by format. If you run a franchise system rather than company-owned stores, start at franchise store locators instead — franchisee-managed data is a different problem.

Working from a spreadsheet of the whole estate? Store mapping software covers the import-and-geocode side, and disambiguates the term from planogram and site-selection software.

What retail teams get on each plan

  • Free — 10 locations, full map and search, SEO location pages. Enough to pilot a region.
  • Starter ($9/mo) — 100 locations, branding removed, brand colours, category filters, analytics.
  • Growth ($15/mo) — 2,000 locations and large CSV imports. Where most regional and national chains land.
  • Scale ($19/mo) — 5,000 locations, REST API, multi-language.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best store locator for a multi-location retailer?

The right answer depends almost entirely on network size and whether you need indexable location pages. For 50 to 5,000 stores, Maptera covers it on published monthly pricing — $15/month for 2,000 locations and $19/month for 5,000 with REST API access — and generates a crawlable page per store automatically. Above 5,000 locations you need a platform with a higher ceiling, and above that again you are usually buying a digital-presence suite rather than a locator.

How many locations can a store locator handle?

Maptera plans run 10 locations on Free, 100 on Starter, 2,000 on Growth, and 5,000 on Scale. That is the whole ladder — there is no hidden enterprise tier. Most retail networks that describe themselves as "thousands of stores" fit inside Growth or Scale once duplicates and closed sites are removed from the export.

Do store locators actually drive foot traffic?

They drive it when they answer the question a phone user is actually asking: which of your stores is closest, is it open, and how do I get there. That means geolocation-first search, results sorted by distance by default, and one-tap directions. A locator that lists stores alphabetically or hides the list under a map does not drive visits, regardless of how good the underlying data is.

Can each store get its own page for local SEO?

Yes, and for a multi-location retailer this is usually the highest-value part of the product. Maptera generates an indexable page per location with Store structured data, address, hours, and geo coordinates, and lists it in the sitemap. A JavaScript map widget on its own contributes nothing to search, because there is no per-location URL for Google to rank.

How do we update hundreds of stores at once?

Bulk CSV import for the initial load and for periodic refreshes, with automatic geocoding to resolve addresses to coordinates. Individual stores can then be edited in the dashboard without re-uploading the file. On the Scale plan you can also push updates programmatically through the REST API.

Does Maptera manage our Google Business Profiles?

No. Maptera runs the locator and location pages on your own website. It does not syndicate your business data to Google, Apple Maps, Bing, or other directories, and it does not manage reviews. If that is the problem you are solving, you want a listings platform, and many retailers run one alongside a dedicated locator.
